FIVE SHORT WORKS BY SAMUEL BECKETT

“Catastrophe”
Written for the then imprisoned artist and activist, Vaclav Havel, “Catastrophe” is often regarded as Beckett’s most overly political work and also his most hopeful.

performed by :
Liam Meagher, Shauna Farrell, Paul Dillon and Damien McDonnell

“What Is The Word ?”
The last poem ever written by Beckett takes the form of an ingeniously maintained fifty three line stammer. It is an ode to the impulse to express oneself and the inability to ever fully do so.

performed by :
Joe Meagher

“Ohio Impromptu”
A piece from Beckett’s so called ghost period, “Ohio Impromptu” is a study of a self divided against itself. The name Ohio itself has been described as a “brief hello between two nothings”, a pun that would certainly not have been lost on the writer.

performed by :
Paul Dillon and Damien McDonnell

“Neither”
This very short prose work was written for avant garde New York composer Morton Feldman, who used it to create one of his most famous compositions to which he also gave the title “Neither”.

performed by :
Damien McDonnell and Chorus

“Stirrings Still”
Written over a six year period towards the end of his life, “Stirrings Still” is a prose composition in three parts, which despite it’s brevity, brings the reader on an emotional journey of a scope visually only found in novels. A lesser known masterpiece!

performed by :
Joe Meagher

“Unspeakable Home”
A new piece of music to round off the evening. Composed and performed by Echo’s Bones, a.k.a. Kevin Power (guitar), Robert Doherty (harmonica and percussion), Brian O’Sullivan (bass), and accompanied by a short film, shot and edited by Eoin Dalton.
